ARE YOU STILL ?

Peter,

First, thank you for sharing your story. I tried to piece together where you were from based on your age, and I may have guessed Austria, but regardless, I’m genuinely fascinated by what you’ve lived through.

Reading about the Japanese occupation during WWII, the chaos, the massacres targeting your minority community, the civil and military dictatorships, and having to flee through multiple countries just to survive isn’t abstract history. Horror. My grandfather was at Pearl Harbor on the day Japan attacked America and served from 1937-46. He enlisted early because he knew of things that you and many others were going. It's REAL lived trauma. It leaves scars and sharpens your ability to recognize early signs of authoritarianism. Your fear isn’t paranoia. It’s earned. I respect it.

I grew up in New Jersey....directly across the street from one of the large Japanese internment camps. That’s not ancient history or something I learned from a book. It’s a reminder that even America, in moments of fear, has suspended rights, justified cruelty, and called it necessary.

So when people say, “it can’t happen here,” I don’t buy it. I know you don't either.

My brother and I both joined the military right after the towers fell on September 11th. He’s still in. I’m not. What I am doing now is try to spread truth, and give power to the people in the form of knowledge because a free press is a cornerstone of democracy.

The problem is that modern media isn’t designed for truth anymore. It’s designed for clicks, outrage, and profit. Even the top substack writers only report what their readers want to hear.

They're not journalists. They're like DJs at a wedding taking requests...

Nuance doesn’t monetize well. Fear does.

I know that we are not as polarized as the news makes us feel.

I hear you clearly. Any move, even a small one, that smells like consolidating power, normalizing control, or drifting toward authoritarianism deserves immediate scrutiny. No exceptions. That kind of vigilance is exactly what this moment demands.

On Bari Weiss specifically, I do believe she’s attempting to operate in good faith by platforming voices from the center-left and center-right when those voices are pushed out elsewhere. That doesn’t make her above criticism, but besides her views on Israel and college protests that turn antisemitic, she has very few right wing views. It just means I’m not ready to write her off without a clear, sustained pattern that proves otherwise. So far I see an attack. But I'll stay vigelant and sunlight is the best disinfectant.

I believe in calling out creeping tyranny wherever it shows up, left, right, media, government, or corporate power. Full stop. If this turns into a pattern of protecting power or soft-pedaling hard truths, I’ll be the first to say it stinks and needs exposure. But I refuse to let fear, even justified fear, turn into preemptive dismissal before the evidence is there. Weiss has built a track record of making powerful people uncomfortable, and that still matters. She's been a good person for years I've know her.. We'll see if she sold her integrity.

As for me, I think several steps ahead. If I see real authoritarian drift in media, policy, or culture, or get word from my brother, I’m not waiting around. I’ll sound the alarm, organize uncomfortable truth-tellers, and do what’s necessary to protect the vulnerable and preserve freedom. I don’t take that lightly.

We need voices like yours. People who have lived under actual dictatorships and recognize the warning signs early. Thank you for speaking up and reminding people what’s at stake.

Mist of all... If there’s something specific in any situation... CALL Me OUT. I will never be offended and am not above admitting fault. Id be humble and grateful. If there's anything that’s triggering your instincts more strongly, I want to hear it.

Read some of what I wrote in the past to learn who I am. I'm a friend. I have a big heart. I am a protector. Here are 4 of my favorites.
