IMO the problem is that many or most Americans have been brainwashed by the Right Wing propaganda about the dirty "S" word___Socialism.
Universal Healthcare is SOCIALISM
Most people don't even know what that is.
Of course as you said, Big Pharma, Insurance companies, etc with their powerful lobbies influence the politicians on both sides of the isle
But, at least to me, if we inform the public, more and more people will see the light
