Liberalism was built on questioning power — now it punishes questions.
When curiosity becomes hate speech, ideas rot. The real liberals — the ones who built the movement — knew free speech wasn’t negotiable. Whether it was protest, art, or the world’s worst opinion, you let it live in the open, because sunlight is the best disinfectant.
Today, we’ve replaced that courage with “safe spaces,” canceled comedians, and silenced speakers — all in the name of tolerance. That’s not progress; that’s fear. You can’t defeat bad ideas by hiding from them. You defeat them by exposing them, debating them, dismantling them.
Somewhere along the line, “liberal” stopped meaning open-minded and started meaning afraid of offense. That’s how a movement built on reason became a brand defined by reaction. And in the process, we drove millions of independents straight into the arms of the right.
