Before I begin, a little back slapping. I only actively support four Substack sites. One is Aaron Parnas who focuses on the news of the day while showing the evidence that supports the reporting. The second is Jack Hopkins whose approach is not the news but an analysis of the patterns the stories demonstrate and how we can arm ourselves to identify their recurrence and then deal with them. Next is Christopher Armitage, The Existentialist Republic. Well researched topics followed by proposed fixes or at least ways we can fight back. The final one is the one you are reding now. An extremely well written and researched newsletter that deals with topics of interest to everyone or that should be of interest to everyone often taking a unique and thought provoking perspective. This newsletter askes a really provocative and vitally consequential question. “Who will flip the switch?”
First a little history. The spark that ignited World War I was the June 28, 1914, assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo. This triggered the "July Crisis," causing a complex web of European alliances to unravel, pulling the world's major powers into global conflict. America’s entry into the European war phase of World War II was caused by Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The Vietnam was instigated by an assumption that communist North Korea would take over all of Southeast Asia via the “Domino Effect.” The Iran issue looks ominously like World War One. It is a powder keg that could be ignited by either economic issues, regional sovereignty issues or religious issues. My prediction is that a European country greatly dependent of Middle East oil will become aggressive causing the middle east to unify on religious grounds sparking WW III. Then the world chooses sides, and we are off.
I'd also recommend Heather Cox Richardson and Marc Elias. Been following Disgusted too as of late. And the Borowitz Report is always spot on political satire.
A ceasefire that took months to negotiate has ended with "They're scum.".
The mechanism that allowed this has been under construction since 1942, expanded by every administration regardless of party, and almost never mentioned in the coverage that follows. Both sides will argue about whether Donald was reckless or decisive. The machine that handed one person that much unilateral power will go completely unexamined.
This is a disturbing situation as stated but I worry even more about all the greedy and power hungry enablers surrounding and supporting someone who appears to be senile or worse.
I could go on and on but it’s all been said already. We all (republican and democrat voters) will be the ones to pay in the end.
